Submission Guidelines

Send all poems, short stories, and visual art to: popcornlitkernels@gmail.com.

Submission Guidelines:

1. Writers may submit up to three poems, two short stories, and one essay/movie review at a time respectively; none of these should exceed 3,000 words.

2. Visual artists may send original artwork inspired by agriculture, film, or anything in between. We appreciate the interpretive value within abstract visual art, and are thereby willing to give those submitting this form of work a bit more leniency. Photography, paintings, cartoons, and other visual genres are welcome. We ask that all visual art submissions be sent in either TIFF, JPEG, and/or PDF formats respectively. (No physical art pieces will be accepted, unless a call is made for tactile art to be inserted in our annual print edition.)

3. We ask that all submissions feature a brief cover letter detailing the author’s name and any publications he or she has been featured in previously. If your work has never been accepted by any publication, never fear! The Popcorn Farm welcomes emerging creative writers, visual artists, and essayists. Also, feel free to throw in any experience you have in the field of cinema or personal tastes in film.

4. While all works must feature some kind of allusion to a specific film, The Popcorn Farm will not be publishing, online or in its annual print format, fan-fiction. One can certainly be a fan of the film he or she is trying to represent, but that does not mean the work he or she submits should adhere to the rules of a screenwriter’s patented universe. The editors will, of course, publish thought-provoking efforts that break the rules of how film and creative writing can be intertwined. Our intent is to shed new light on the silver screens everyone else thought were sacred and settled.

5. While we prefer that all work submitted to The Popcorn Farm be unpublished prior to consideration, exceptions can be made. If a work has been previously published, we ask that the writer or artist specify where and when.

The editorial staff will read or view the work and make our fairest decisions based on where it fits in our current issue and content. If a writer is interested, we extend an offer for editorial suggestions. If edits are suggested, we encourage authors to make changes and resubmit.

We look forward to reading your submissions,

The Popcorn Farm Staff
